Community Engagement Brand Ambassador Mike Doyle Visits MAHDLO Youth Zone, Oldham

At Trade Centre UK, community means everything and few places embody that spirit better than MAHDLO, an incredible youth centre in Oldham (that’s “Oldham” spelled backwards!).

This week, our Community Brand Ambassador, Mike Doyle, had the pleasure of visiting MAHDLO, one of eleven Onside Youth Zones across the country. What he discovered there left a lasting impression:

“Today has blown me away,” said Mike. “This place is so special. The facilities are fantastic, and the passion from the team is truly inspiring. I can’t believe they have 11 of these all over the country!”

A Safe Haven in the Heart of Oldham

Oldham has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the country at 44% compared to the national average of 29%. At Mahdlo 69% of their members live in the most deprived areas but they don’t let that get them down.

Mahdlo has stated that 68% of their members who attend the young zone regularly have reported an increase or maintained mental wellbeing and 78% of young people reported an increased or maintained their self-confidence. Showcasing that Mahdlo is a much-needed youth provision in Oldham.

Curtis from our Trade Centre Rochdale branch, is himself a former MAHDLO member, and it was clear and lovely to hear the impact and positivity this experience had on him.

Amazing Facilities and Life Skills

Inside MAHDLO, the opportunities for young people are endless. Whether it’s learning to play musical instruments, developing cooking skills, or enjoying sports like basketball, football (indoor and outdoor), and even wall climbing, there’s something for everyone.

The youth zone also features:

· A gaming zone to help bring young people together in a safe, social space.

· A chill-out area and café, offering free meals and subsidised extras from as little as £1.

· A creative and visual arts area.

· A fully equipped gym.

· Dedicated dance and drama studios.

· A sensory room

· And even a kitchen and dining area where children and families can learn to cook and share meals together, creating that homely, community feel.

“It was an absolute pleasure to meet Mike and show him around our amazing facilities. The support from Trade Centre UK is truly incredible and the difference the contribution has made to our Halloween Parties is phenomenal” said Elizabeth Kershaw, who is a fundraiser at the centre.

The Numbers Tell the Story

In the past year alone, MAHDLO has:

· Welcomed 3,723 members

· Delivered 1,832 activities

· Served 7,529 meals

· Benefited from 3,548 volunteer hours

Despite rising costs, the centre has to find the remaining £1.6 million needed to operate annually. That’s a huge challenge but one they meet with passion, determination, and the support of their local community.

Trade Centre UK Proudly Supports MAHDLO

We’re proud to stand alongside MAHDLO and support their upcoming events. This Halloween, we helped make one of the longest Halloween celebrations ever – a three-day spectacular with the cauldron at the heart of the fun!

We’re also delighted to have contributed a box of goodies including footballs, water bottles, and other gifts which made the Sports Co-Ordinator very happy.

Looking forward to the festive period, Trade Centre UK will be partnering with Mahdlo to spread joy and Christmas spirit amongst the young people and their families. Filling the centre with festive cheer.
